Top Ten Tuesday: 4th of July Inspired Covers

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's topic is...

4th of July Inspired Covers!

Since the fine folks over at The Broke and the Bookish are on a break, I decided to choose a topic to celebrate my nation's birthday. The 4th of July is a commonly celebrated with elaborate fireworks displays. Therefore, I searched my read shelf, and looked for covers that made me think "4th of July".

Fireworks
Katie Cotugno
Series: n/a
Publisher: Blazer + Bray

There are a bunch of things that scream 4th of July to me here. The name of the book is Fireworks and it's the number one way we celebrate that holiday. There are also firework displays featured along with lots of red, white and blue. The theme of this book is freedom too, which is what we're celebrating.

Starflight
Melissa Landers
Series: Starflight, #1
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

I know it's supposed to be stars, but that trail is reminiscent of those lovely shooting fireworks. This book is about trying to stay free, as they are evading capture for a crime they did not commit.

Caraval
Stephanie Garber
Series: Caraval, #1
Publisher: Flatiron

The star reminds me of a bursting type firework, and I see red, white, and blue on that cover too. More characters trying to break free of their lives. The Dragna sisters were using Caraval as a means to escape the oppression of their father, and the threat of an arranged marriage. He stripped them of many of their freedoms, but they were waging a rebellion to take them back.

The Sun is Also a Star
Nicola Yoon
Series: n/a
Publisher: Delacorte Press

I really love this cover, and I know it's string to signify the connections between all these events that trigger other events, but from far away, I see the display of the peony type firework.

All-American Girl
Meg Cabot
Series: All-American Girl, #1
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers

This one is so all-american, it's in the title. The star of the cover evocative of the traditional bursting fireworks, and the there are those themes of a fight for independence that you would expect in a good YA book.

What Light
Jay Asher
Series: n/a
Publisher: Razorbill

Another case of, I know it's not fireworks, but it could be. I think I could build a case, that there was a fight for freedom, as Caleb was trying to free himself from his past. He had atoned for his past deeds, and was looking to move on. It sort of goes with the theme of Independence Day.

These Broken Stars
Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner
Series: Starbound, #1
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

More space covers with stars that could double as fireworks, and if you delve further into the series, there is rebellion, and that is what my forefathers did all those years ago.

Pivot Point
Kasie West
Series: Pivot Point, #1
Publisher: HarperTeen

I have no idea what that is supposed to be on the cover, but it looks like sparks that you see from some fireworks or sparklers. I don't really care though, because this was an awesome book, and I always love featuring Kasie West.

I'll Give You the Sun
Jandy Nelson
Series: n/a
Publisher: Dial Books

This cover of I'll Give You the Sun reads bursting firework to me. I feel like I am seeing a lot of that, eh? I really love this cover though, because this story made me feel so much joy, and all those colors play to that.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson
John Green & David Levithan
Series: Will Grayson, Will Grayson, #1
Publisher: Dutton Books

The old starburst again. Those lights are more abstract, but still make me think of those fabulous bursts of light we see in most fireworks displays. And let's be real, Tiny Cooper was a total firecracker, who exploded off the page and into my heart.

Do you like watching fireworks?

  1. Those covers are beautiful! I've had Pivot Point By Kasie West on my TBR pile for years and have read a few chapters on and off during that time. I never really got into it :/

    1. Pretty covers are a must for me. I am a cover snob. Pivot Point was one of my later KWest reads. I wasn't sure how she would do outside of the contemporary realm, but the thought the duology was great.

  2. Great choice of theme, Sam - and I love your picks! Could there be one better suited than Cotugno's Fireworks? :) I've been meaning to read These Broken Stars for ages.

    1. I am not a huge SFF reader, but I adored These Broken Stars. This TTT thing is hard. I feel rudderless without The Broke and the Bookish. I am going to start brainstorming now for next week.

    2. I know! When I saw they were on hiatus my heart dropped. LOL It's like, what am I supposed to do now? :) I think I'll be perusing their list of old/past topics.

    3. They have done this for so many years, and I think maybe it's just a vacation/break. My co-blogger had suggested books with rebellion for this week, but that's more her thing than mine, so I couldn't think of too many. Now I have a whole week to think of something.

    1. I loved both those books. Yoon is up there with Rainbow Rowell for crafting characters I love, and there is something easy about her writing that brings me comfort.

  5. I LOVE these! This is such a great topic, very imaginative, I am impressed!I LOVE all of these covers. I like fireworks, but I also don't like the insane crowds of people. So I guess I want someone to plan me a private fireworks display? Bwhahha.

    1. Awe, thanks! This one time, when I was living in FL, we were heading to Disney for the weekend, and when we got to the hotel, there was some sort of overbooking issue. So, they asked us if we would mind taking a free upgrade to the Grand Floridian. (Heck yes!) It was lovely watching the firework show over the lagoon from my room. So, yeah, private fireworks are pretty awesome.

    1. Thank you much! It was a struggle, but I was trying to think of a way to showcase books I have read and work in the holiday. Coming up with a topic made me really appreciate how the fine Broke and Bookish people have been doing this for years.
